Cryptocurrency Experts Scammed Russian Woman Out of More Than 9 Million Rubles

0 Reading time: 7 min. Сoinspot

A resident of Salekhard believed people who introduced themselves as cryptocurrency experts and, over two and a half months, transferred 9.4 million rubles to them. The 47-year-old woman was promised quick profits from buying and reselling digital assets, but in the end, she was left without money and turned to the police.

How the Scheme Worked

The scammers contacted the woman via Telegram. They called themselves crypto investment specialists and began convincing her that they would help her safely grow her capital. In their correspondence, the fraudsters emphasized high earnings and almost no risks.

According to them, the profit was supposed to come from buying digital assets and then selling them at a higher price. This approach often seems convincing to people who have heard of cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, Ethereum, blockchain, Binance, or major tech companies like Microsoft and Tesla, but have no experience evaluating such offers themselves.

After the first transfers, the scammers showed the woman fictitious income growth. They gave her advice on transactions, maintained the illusion of successful investments, and increasingly insisted that she increase her investments.

Transfers Continued for More Than Two Months

For two and a half months, the Salekhard resident sent money to bank cards and crypto wallets specified by the so-called consultants. With each new payment, the amounts grew: the woman expected to soon collect the promised profit.

When she realized she had become a victim of fraud, her contacts stopped responding. After that, the Russian woman went to the police.

Who Is a Cryptocurrency Expert

A real cryptocurrency expert is a specialist who understands digital assets, blockchain, exchanges, wallets, and the associated risks. Their job is not to promise guaranteed profits, but to help a person understand the market and make more informed decisions.

  • Explains how cryptocurrencies, exchanges, wallets, and transfers work.
  • Assesses the risks of transactions, asset storage, and dealing with intermediaries.
  • Breaks down fees, liquidity, volatility, and possible price movement scenarios.
  • Helps establish security rules: from account protection to verifying crypto wallet addresses.
  • Prepares market analytics but does not present forecasts as guaranteed income.

How to Choose a Cryptocurrency Expert

Before a consultation, it is important to check not loud promises, but the specialist’s reputation, experience, and transparency. A reliable consultant calmly explains risks, does not rush you to make transfers, and does not ask you to send money to personal cards or someone else’s crypto wallets.

  • See if the specialist has an open work history, public reviews, feedback, and a clear area of expertise.
  • Ask them to explain the strategy in simple terms: what is being bought, why, for how long, and what the risks are.
  • Clarify the payment format, the presence of a contract, or at least clear terms for the consultation.
  • Pay attention to whether the expert asks about your goals, timeframes, experience, and acceptable level of risk.
  • Consider it a red flag if they promise quick profits, apply pressure, offer secret schemes, or demand that you urgently top up your account.

During a consultation, you can prepare questions in advance: how to store assets safely, how to check a platform, which fees to consider, what to do if you suspect fraud, and how to distinguish a long-term strategy from a risky bet on price growth.

Where to Find Specialists and What to Learn

It is safer to look for experts through professional communities, educational programs, conferences, open analytics platforms, and public profiles with an archive of reviews. The influencer role itself is not important, but a verifiable reputation and willingness to explain risks without pressuring the client are.

Training for a cryptocurrency specialist is usually built around blockchain, wallet security, exchange operations, regulatory basics, technical analysis, and risk management. They use price charts, order books, blockchain data, trading volumes, news background, market capitalization, and volatility indicators in their work.

The income of such a specialist depends on experience, reputation, work format, and tasks: one-time consultations, analytics, training, transaction support, or working in a crypto project team. Experts and influencers influence the market through public forecasts, reviews, and commentary: such messages can change participant sentiment, especially if quickly picked up by social networks and media.

When experts assess the future of cryptocurrencies, they usually look at regulation, interest from large companies, infrastructure development, service security, and demand cycles. For private investors, such opinions are useful only as one of many sources, not as a ready-made instruction for transferring money.

Similar Cases Continue to Happen

Recently, a resident of Nizhny Novgorod suffered in a similar scheme. For almost a month, scammers posing as employees of an investment company convinced her to transfer funds to accounts they controlled. As a result, the woman lost more than 7 million rubles.

Such stories show that the topic of digital assets remains a convenient lure for fraudsters. They use familiar names and images from the world of finance and technology: from talk about the market in the United States of America to mentions of Elon Musk, X (the social network), Tesla, and even internet memes, to create a sense of relevance and reliability for the victim.
