The payment giant PayPal has officially launched an updated suite of services in the UK—users now have access to debit and credit cards, the PayPal+ loyalty program, and global transfers with no fees.
Full-fledged PayPal return to UK offline
Previously, PayPal was mainly associated with online payments in the UK, but now the company is stepping into physical retail. Starting today, UK users can get a PayPal debit card, participate in the PayPal+ program, and make purchases without traditional transaction fees.
The company calls it a “smart way to pay,” but in essence, it is a complete relaunch of the user experience. Now PayPal combines credit, debit, a rewards system, and Buy Now Pay Later into a single ecosystem. The UK is the first country where the PayPal+ program has been launched.
How PayPal+ works: the new loyalty program
PayPal+ lets you earn points for every purchase—both online and offline, regardless of whether you use your PayPal balance, a linked card, or Pay in 3 installment plan.
The main feature is the PayPal Debit Card—users earn 10 times more bonus points for everyday spending. Every 1,000 PayPal+ points equals £10, which can be spent on online purchases via PayPal.
Points are accumulated automatically, with no fees, hidden terms, or expiration date. All users start at the Blue level, then can move up to Gold and Black. Leveling up gives 50% more value when converting points, as well as access to exclusive promotions and VIP offers.
PayPal emphasizes that Britons are the first in the world to test the new system. The card is available to all users directly through the PayPal app, with no additional requirements.
PayPal credit card goes offline
Previously, PayPal Credit was used only for online purchases. Now the company has added a physical and virtual card, allowing you to pay in stores like a regular credit card. All PayPal Credit transactions also earn PayPal+ bonus points.
Even the Pay in 3 installment plan—the company’s own “Buy Now, Pay Later” option—participates in the rewards system. Thus, PayPal combines all products into a single bonus ecosystem, where the client receives cashback regardless of the payment method.
Partnership with Live Nation and £150 million investment
The PayPal+ launch is accompanied by major marketing partnerships. The first is Live Nation UK—the organizer of the biggest concerts and festivals. PayPal+ members will get early access to tickets and special privileges at events.
The entire program is backed by £150 million in investments aimed at updating the product line and strengthening PayPal’s position in the UK. The company is betting on a unified strategy, combining online and offline within a single platform.
“This is the beginning of a new chapter for PayPal in the UK. We’ve redefined loyalty: no fees, a new debit card with tenfold bonuses, and more ways to earn rewards for everyday purchases,” said Diego Scotti, General Manager of PayPal Consumer Group.
PayPal UK head Tamer El-Emary added:
“We listened to users and created products that reflect their real needs. Now everything customers love about PayPal online is also available on the high street.”
PayPal’s new strategy: from online leader to unified brand
For more than two decades, PayPal has dominated online payments, but now the company aims to become a universal tool for all payment scenarios—from in-store shopping to global transfers.
The integration of PayPal+ and the launch of physical cards show that the company is preparing to compete with fintech ecosystems like Revolut, Monzo, and Wise, offering a single wallet with loyalty, credit, and multi-currency features.
