When Will Altseason Start and Are There Conditions for It

0 Reading time: 7 min. Сoinspot

Altseason is a market phase in which most cryptocurrencies grow faster than Bitcoin. During these periods, capital flows en masse from BTC to altcoins, and the movement becomes especially sharp: individual coins can gain tens or even hundreds of percent in a short time. The flip side of such dynamics is high volatility, due to which prices can roll back just as quickly.

Why Alts Have Not Yet Taken the Initiative

There is currently no clear reversal in favor of alternative coins. The main capital is still concentrated in BTC, and investors are choosing the market’s most understandable and liquid asset.

  • Institutional participants buy Bitcoin through ETFs
  • Large players prefer assets with high liquidity
  • Uncertainty in global markets reduces interest in volatile instruments

Usually, the start of altseason requires not just one signal, but a combination of several factors.

  • BTC growth slows down, and some capital starts to look for more profitable ideas
  • Bitcoin dominance decreases, and altcoin capitalization grows faster
  • The market shows interest in new technologies, DeFi, NFT, or other strong narratives
  • Regulatory changes do not scare off participants and do not break demand for risky assets

Because of this, alts are not growing as confidently as they usually do before a broad demand phase. Even recognizable assets like Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin depend on whether a real flow of capital from BTC to the rest of the market will begin.

How Altseason Usually Starts

Historically, a strong phase for alternative coins did not begin at the moment of Bitcoin’s maximum strength, but after its growth slowed. First, money moved into Ethereum, then demand expanded to a broader segment of the crypto market.

Market capitalization is redistributed during such periods: the share of BTC stops growing at its previous pace, and investors more actively look for ideas outside the main coin. In English-language analytics, the terms Cryptocurrency and Coin are often used for this part of the market, but the essence remains the same: capital goes where participants expect higher returns.

When the Next Altseason Might Start

The scenario for 2025 depends not on a specific date, but on capital behavior. The longer Bitcoin holds the market’s attention, the later alts get a chance for a broad impulse. The start of altseason will become more likely if BTC slows down after strong growth, the altcoin index consolidates above key levels, and interest in riskier crypto assets begins to grow.

It is especially important to monitor how demand for Ethereum and large liquid altcoins changes. If they start to grow faster than BTC, and then the movement spreads to mid- and small-cap coins, this already looks like the early phase of altseason.

What the Altcoin Index Shows

Currently, the altcoin season index is at 49 points. This is not enough for a full-fledged altseason: in previous cycles, sustained mass growth began after the indicator consolidated above 75 points.

The index compares the dynamics of major altcoins with Bitcoin over a selected period. The more coins outperform BTC, the higher the indicator value. It is better to use it not as a one-time signal, but as a filter: what matters is not a short spike, but the maintenance of high values along with a decrease in Bitcoin dominance and an increase in altcoin capitalization.

  • 49 points: the market does not yet show a full-fledged altseason
  • Above 75 points: the zone after which more sustained mass growth began in previous cycles
  • Additional signal: interest in alts is growing, and BTC is no longer the main source of returns

Therefore, it is too early to say that Altseason has already started. For now, the market is more in anticipation: Bitcoin holds the center of attention, and the data that investors track on platforms like CoinMarketCap do not yet confirm a mass transition of capital into alternative coins.

How to Prepare for Altseason

Preparation begins before the market has already moved sharply upward. It is important to understand in advance which coins look stronger than the market, where they have liquidity, and what risk is acceptable for each position.

  • Monitor the altcoin index, BTC dominance, and altcoin capitalization
  • Make a list of liquid coins, including large assets like Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin
  • Determine entry levels, profit-taking, and exit points in advance in case of a wrong scenario
  • Do not concentrate all capital in one coin or one sector

During altseason, it is easier to make money for those who do not chase every move, but act according to a plan. Partial profit-taking helps not to lose results if the market suddenly reverses.

What Risks Exist During Altseason

The main risk of altseason is the speed of movement. Coins can grow quickly, but the same volatility works in the opposite direction. The further capital moves away from BTC into less liquid assets, the higher the probability of sharp drawdowns.

  • Entering late after strong growth increases the risk of buying in an overheated market
  • Low liquidity amplifies drawdowns when large players exit
  • Interest in individual sectors can fade quickly
  • A sharp return of capital to BTC can stop altcoin growth
