Cryptocurrency Payment in Dubai Airports: Duty-Free Shopping and Emirates Tickets

For Dubai, this is another step toward making cryptocurrency a common payment method in everyday services. The Dubai Duty Free store added digital payments at two airports at once: Dubai International Airport DXB and Al Maktoum Airport AMIA.

  • Dubai Duty Free at DXB and AMIA — shopping at duty-free stores and online; payment is made through Pay, available assets are selected in the payment interface.
  • Emirates — airline tickets on the website and in the mobile app; the digital payment is converted into UAE dirhams.
  • — payment provider for transactions, which helps to process the transaction and confirm payment.

How Cryptocurrency Payment Works in Dubai Airports

Dubai Duty Free became the first aviation retailer in the Middle East to implement such a payment option. Shoppers can choose crypto payment when paying for goods at Dubai Duty Free locations in DXB and AMIA or when placing an order online.

  • The customer selects Dubai Duty Free products at the airport or online.
  • At the payment stage, they choose cryptocurrency payment via Pay.
  • They confirm the transaction in the payment interface and receive purchase confirmation.

A separate agreement was signed with Emirates. The airline has enabled the purchase of tickets with digital currency on its website and in its mobile app. The customer selects a flight, proceeds to payment, chooses an available digital asset in the payment interface, and the final amount is converted into UAE dirhams.

You can pay with cryptocurrency for purchases at Dubai Duty Free and Emirates airline tickets. Before confirming payment, check available assets, the final amount, possible fees, and refund conditions: these parameters may depend on the selected service and the specific transaction.

For the UAE market, this is the development of an already noticeable trend. The country is expanding its infrastructure for virtual assets, and Dubai continues to promote crypto payments in services that people use every day.

Access to digital payments at duty-free fits into the Emirates’ overall course of integrating cryptocurrencies into regular consumer scenarios.

Why This Launch Matters for the Middle East

Airport retail is one of the most visible segments for payment innovation: it serves tourists, transit passengers, and business travelers. Therefore, the launch at Dubai Duty Free strengthens Dubai’s position as a platform where digital assets are gradually moving from an investment niche to practical use.

The combination of Dubai Duty Free and Emirates shows that crypto payments are starting to go beyond individual online services. Now they are appearing at points where speed, a clear payment scenario, and the ability to choose a convenient financial tool are important to the customer.

This gives the customer several clear advantages.

  • Payment speed.
  • A clear scenario without unnecessary steps.
  • The ability to choose a convenient financial tool.

Norway Previously Launched Bitcoin Payment in Duty-Free

A similar experiment has already been conducted in Europe. In December 2025, Norwegian Travel Retail Norway added bitcoin payment for duty-free stores at Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, and Trondheim airports. The company called this launch the first in the world for the industry.

At the first stage, the option worked only for the Click & Collect service when picking up an order at Oslo Airport. Travel Retail Norway management viewed this format as a test before possible expansion to other stores and payment methods.

Travel Retail Norway Deputy CEO Håkon Dagestad explained that the company wants to give customers more freedom of choice and offer a simple, safe payment scenario. According to him, bitcoin could become a convenient addition for customers who prefer digital currencies.

The payment system for the Norwegian project was provided by Satoshi Consult. The solution was developed taking into account local regulations, and Travel Retail Norway hoped to attract the attention of the bitcoin community and present Oslo and Norway as progressive destinations.

The scheme was simple: the customer placed an order through Click & Collect, and upon pickup at Oslo Airport, chose bitcoin, confirmed the payment from a wallet supporting Lightning Network, and received a receipt. The amount was shown in Norwegian kroner and converted at the time of payment.
