Rumors have emerged about the imminent launch of a new flagship model from OpenAI called GPT-5.6. According to documents allegedly circulating on developer forums and in communities related to prediction markets, the release could happen as soon as June 23.
Discussions have intensified against the backdrop of the situation around Claude Fable 5 from Anthropic. The model was introduced on June 9, but just a few days later its use was restricted after a security issue was discovered.
The timing of the possible GPT-5.6 release is considered by many market participants to be no coincidence. According to Polymarket as of June 15, the probability of the model being released between June 22 and 28 was estimated at about 83%.
These figures indicate that participants in prediction markets are increasingly leaning toward a June launch scenario for the new OpenAI model.
At the same time, prediction markets themselves are not confirmation of insider information. Rather, they reflect the collective expectations of users and reactions to news about major tech companies.

Since the beginning of June, contracts on Polymarket related to the launch of GPT-5.6 in the last week of the month have gradually increased in price. By mid-June, the probability of this scenario reached its highest level ever observed.
What Is Known About GPT-5.6 From Leaks
The developer community is trying to reconstruct the characteristics of GPT-5.6 based on indirect evidence that appeared during internal testing at OpenAI.
According to Android Headlines, OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki called the new model a significant step forward compared to GPT-5.5, which was released on April 23.
Traces of GPT-5.6 began appearing in OpenAI’s backend logs as early as mid-May. Developers discovered several code names, including iris-alpha, ember-alpha, and kindle-alpha. Many consider the latter version the main candidate for release.
According to leaks, one of the main improvements could be a context window of up to 1.5 million tokens. Sources also mention a significant boost in the model’s programming capabilities and performance on multi-step tasks.
Developer Mark Kretschmann wrote on X that according to his information, GPT-5.6 shows very strong results and outperforms Anthropic Mythos in a number of agent programming tests.
There are also mentions of improvements in interface generation. According to testers, the kindle-alpha version is capable of generating high-quality UI code even for short and simple requests without detailed instructions.

However, the feedback was not all positive. One developer compared kindle-alpha to an earlier test version called Kepler. According to him, under identical requests and conditions, the new version performed worse than its predecessor.
Price War Between Models
One of the most discussed points in the leaks was the cost of using GPT-5.6 via API.
According to sources, the new OpenAI model could be about three times cheaper than Claude Fable 5 from Anthropic.
For comparison, Anthropic set the price of Fable 5 at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. This is about twice as expensive as the previous generation of the model.
Currently, using GPT-5.5 costs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens.
The price difference could play a significant role in the battle for corporate clients. This is especially true for companies that use AI agents for long-term tasks, process automation, and programming.
At the other end of the market is DeepSeek V4-Pro. After a tariff revision, the model costs about $0.435 per million input tokens and $0.87 per million output tokens. In terms of price, it is significantly cheaper than both Anthropic and OpenAI.
If GPT-5.6 really matches the level of Claude Fable 5 or can surpass it while keeping the rates of GPT-5.5 or making them even lower, the pressure on Anthropic could increase significantly.
The situation clearly shows how quickly the economics of the artificial intelligence market are changing. While Anthropic is raising the price of its flagship models, DeepSeek is betting on the lowest possible prices and is gradually strengthening its position among advanced AI system providers.
Wharton School of Business Professor Ethan Mollick, who tested Claude Fable 5, noted another important feature of the model. According to him, it can perform tasks without human intervention for about nine and a half hours straight.

However, such autonomy has a downside. With prolonged use, the cost of using the model rises quickly, which can become a serious problem for its implementation in real work processes.
The Economics of AI Agents Take Center Stage
A recent study by specialists from MIT and Stanford revealed an interesting pattern. Autonomous AI agents for programming can consume hundreds or even thousands of times more tokens than regular chatbots or code generation tools.
Researchers found that the bulk of the costs are for input tokens. At the same time, increasing the processing volume does not always lead to a comparable increase in result quality.
In other words, high consumption of computational resources does not guarantee better performance.
Because of this, companies are increasingly looking not only at model performance in tests and rankings, but also at the cost of completing real tasks. For the corporate segment, cost efficiency is gradually becoming as important a factor as leadership in benchmarks.
This is especially relevant for AI agents that work autonomously for hours, perform complex chains of actions, and constantly process large volumes of context. In such scenarios, even a small difference in token price can significantly affect a business’s total expenses.
A Tense Month for the AI Market
June could be one of the busiest months for the artificial intelligence industry. In a short time, the market has received or may receive several major releases: Claude Fable 5 from Anthropic, Gemini 3.5 Pro from Google and GPT-5.6 from OpenAI.
Such a dense release schedule shows how much the update cycle for leading models has shortened. Less than three months have passed since GPT-5.4 was released, and OpenAI has essentially moved to releasing new versions about every seven weeks.

Competition between companies is now not only about technology. Pressure is also increasing from financial markets.
On June 1, Anthropic announced it had filed for an IPO, and a week later OpenAI did the same. If SpaceXAI completes its preparations for a listing next month, the combined valuation of the three companies could exceed $3.6 trillion.
In this situation, it is especially important who will set the tone for the market and shape investor expectations first.
However, there are still debates around the possible GPT-5.6 release. Some industry participants believe that OpenAI is in a difficult position.
On June 16, a user on X with the nickname Kai (@hqmank) wrote that the company has virtually no perfect scenario. If GPT-5.6 turns out to be weaker than Claude Fable 5, leadership in the AI race will remain with Anthropic. If the new OpenAI model demonstrates a higher level of capabilities, the company could face the same increased regulatory scrutiny that previously targeted Fable 5.
In his opinion, model performance is no longer the sole factor for success. Issues of regulation, safety, and the consequences of deploying the most powerful AI systems are becoming increasingly important.
