Polymarket’s annual revenue has risen above the $1 billion mark, CNBC reports, citing sources. The company reached this new milestone roughly six weeks after launching access to its U.S. exchange, with a further boost from sharply increased trading volumes in prediction markets related to the World Cup.
Trading on the U.S. Platform Accelerates Sharply
According to Dune Analytics, activity on Polymarket’s U.S. platform has multiplied several times over in a short period. In mid-May, daily trading volume was around $50 million, and by June 20 it had surpassed $200 million.
The international version of Polymarket also reached record weekly volumes. User interest intensified amid the hype around the World Cup after weaker performance in April and May.
Why Prediction Markets Are Rapidly Gaining Popularity
The prediction market segment is growing thanks to an influx of retail investors. Users are increasingly making trades on the outcomes of various events:
- Elections
- Sports events
- Financial news
Until recently, such platforms were seen as a niche at the intersection of cryptocurrency and academic finance. In less than two years, they have become a significant trading sector where participants buy and sell contracts tied to future events.
Unlike traditional stocks as a financial instrument, these contracts do not provide a share in the business. Their price depends on how the market assesses the probability of a specific outcome.
What Users Are Betting on Now
Polymarket offers some of the most popular betting markets. Users can choose between different scenarios:
- FIFA World Cup winner
- Possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz
Rising interest in such topics supports the platform’s turnover and increases attention to the industry from major financial market players.
Major Investors Have Noticed the Prediction Market
Last year, Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, agreed to invest $2 billion in Polymarket. For the prediction market industry, this became one of the most significant signals of support from a major financial institution.
Amid growing turnover and interest from retail traders, Polymarket is strengthening its position among platforms where users trade expectations on important political, sports, and economic events.
