Ripple is losing one of its top engineers. David Schwartz, the architect of the XRP Ledger and the company’s Chief Technology Officer, has announced he will step down by the end of 2025. This event is being called the end of an era in Ripple’s history.
Blockchain architect and company strategist
Schwartz joined Ripple more than 13 years ago. He started out working in cryptography and later led the technical direction. Under his leadership, the XRP Ledger became the foundation for global settlement solutions.
He participated in the company’s key milestones, including the launch of its own stablecoin in 2024. For many in the industry, he became not just the CTO but a symbol of Ripple’s technical reliability.
A decision to leave, but not the community
In a message on X, Schwartz emphasized:
“I want to spend more time with my children and grandchildren. I want to return to hobbies I’ve long set aside. But I’m not leaving the XRP community.”
There will be no complete break. He will join Ripple’s board of directors and retain influence over the company’s strategy. His experience will remain part of the ecosystem.
Management and community reaction
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse called him “a true veteran of the crypto industry.” He noted that weekly work discussions will continue, though the format of the role will change.
The XRP community also reacted strongly. For many investors and blockchain supporters, the news was emotional—Schwartz has represented Ripple’s technical face for years.
Impact on Ripple and XRP
Personnel changes in such companies raise questions about the future. The departure of the CTO could weaken the company’s position if the successor fails to meet the challenges. But Schwartz’s presence on the board of directors reduces risks: he will continue to participate in strategic decisions.
For XRP, this is unlikely to be a turning point. Short-term fluctuations are possible, but in the long run the market will focus on Ripple’s products and their use in the banking sector.
What’s next?
Ripple will need to find a new technical leader. Competition with other blockchains is intensifying, and the strategy for developing the XRP Ledger will be key to success.
But the company is not losing its architect. It is only changing the format of his involvement. For Schwartz, this is a chance to devote time to his personal life without completely leaving the industry he helped build.
