Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, confirmed that he is officially divorced and offered OKX founder Star Xu a $1 billion bet to prove it.
This challenge came after Xu questioned CZ‘s marital status. The dispute flared up following the release of his memoir, “Freedom of Money,” published on April 8.
Star Xu Questions CZ’s Divorce
Xu demanded that CZ provide a divorce agreement signed by both parties.
He said he would publicly apologize if CZ could show this document. Otherwise, he said, the divorce claim would be considered misleading.
“I usually ignore all these false statements and attacks. But… you can apologize now. I am officially divorced,” CZ wrote.
In response, CZ confirmed the divorce and offered a $1 billion bet. He noted that he would not publish legal documents online out of respect for his ex-wife’s privacy.
At the same time, he suggested verifying the agreement through lawyers if Xu agreed to the bet.
“I’m willing to bet $1 billion (or any amount you choose) that I am officially divorced, and it happened long before today,” CZ added.
He gave Xu 24 hours to respond, noting that silence would show who is really misleading the public.
A Dispute That Has Lasted More Than a Decade
The dispute over the divorce is just the latest episode in a rivalry that began back in 2014. At that time, CZ was the CTO at OKCoin, the predecessor of OKX.
Their disagreements over company shares, the contract for the Bitcoin.com domain, and accusations of document forgery have surfaced more than once.
In his memoir, CZ also claims that Huobi founder Li Lin told him in 2025 that Xu allegedly reported him to Chinese authorities. Xu himself denies this.
“Both OKX and Binance are regulated by several regulators. As a beneficiary of a regulated company, publicly offering a $1 billion bet is, to put it mildly, unprofessional,” Xu replied to CZ’s offer.
The head of OKX also called on Binance regulators to pay attention to this situation and questioned whether CZ ‘s assets were legally divided after the divorce.
“Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos have already shown what proper asset division in a divorce should look like,” he added.
Yi He, co-CEO of Binance, has been a longtime partner of CZ both personally and in business, and is also the mother of three of his children. According to media reports, CZ has five children in total, two from a previous marriage.

They met in 2014 while working at the crypto exchange OKCoin, and it was she who invited him to the company. Around that time, they became a couple, and in 2017 they co-founded Binance together.
Amid the conflict between CZ and Star Xu, Yi He also spoke out, emphasizing her role in the company.
“I’m not some fragile heroine from a novel. I’m the second-largest shareholder and co-CEO of Binance, which continues to compete fiercely in the market even after CZ stepped down,” she said.
