Russian Crypto Market May Become Easier to Separate From the Global Crypto Industry

0 Reading time: 7 min. Сoinspot

After the regulatory rules are updated, the Russian crypto market risks becoming more transparent to external oversight: the crypto wallets of legal exchanges, brokers, and digital depositories will be easier to identify, and the funds passing through them may be classified as high risk, according to Kirill Pistsov, head of product development at the Finam financial group.

Why the Legal Market Is Becoming More Noticeable

According to Kirill Pistsov, the new vulnerability is not created by a single regulation, but by a combination of Russian regulation and the external sanctions environment. Legislative changes in Russia require market participants to legalize, making liquidity provider addresses and asset movements more open to analysis.

If foreign authorities decide to increase pressure, sanctions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may affect not only companies but also their associated crypto addresses. In this situation, cryptocurrency that has passed through Russian legal platforms could raise questions on the foreign side.

In practice, several scenarios are possible.

  • An international exchange may ask to confirm the origin of funds.
  • A foreign custodial service may request documents for assets.
  • An online digital currency exchange service may conduct additional checks.
  • In the worst case, the transfer may simply be rejected.

Risk of Price Gap and Restrictions for Investors

Kirill Pistsov suggests that such barriers could reduce opportunities for arbitrage between Russian and foreign platforms. As a result, a separate price circuit may emerge within the country, where assets will trade at a discount to international quotes.

By decision of the Central Bank, the legal market in Russia is currently limited to three types of assets.

  • Bitcoin: available for purchase on a Russian platform and further storage in a hardware wallet.
  • Ether: available on the same terms, but withdrawing it outside the local infrastructure may be difficult.
  • US dollar stablecoin: included in the narrow list of available assets, but carries a separate risk due to issuer control.

This risk is especially sensitive for stablecoins: technically, the issuer can block tokens at holders’ addresses. Therefore, such an asset may require additional confirmations from the investor for accounting, tax, and compliance purposes.

“Limits for unqualified investors and a narrow list of available assets do not in themselves ‘taint’ cryptocurrency, but they may further reduce the depth of the domestic market,” says Kirill Pistsov.

Demand for Legal Crypto Services Will Remain

Despite the risks, the Finam expert is confident that the legal segment will be in demand. Mass investors value the ability to buy with rubles, a familiar broker, legal protection, and clear tax accounting. For such clients, investing in crypto assets through regulated infrastructure seems simpler than working independently with foreign services.

More experienced market participants, according to Kirill Pistsov, will pay closer attention to price differences at home and abroad. For them, the personal wallet and the ability to withdraw coins from the platform will remain important. Against this background, even related topics like mining or the use of artificial intelligence in transaction analysis take a back seat: access to external liquidity remains key.

“Real demand will largely depend on whether Russian participants can maintain working channels with external liquidity and prevent the legal market from turning into a completely closed system,” says Kirill Pistsov.

What Matters to Users in Russia

For trading within the legal circuit, this refers to Russian exchanges, brokers, and digital depositories. This route is convenient for those who value buying with rubles, a familiar broker, legal protection, and clear tax accounting, but the range of assets remains narrow.

  • If you need easy entry through regulated infrastructure, the custodial model with a broker or platform is more convenient.
  • If independent control is important, bitcoin and ether can be stored in a personal, including hardware, wallet.
  • If you plan to withdraw outside Russian infrastructure, you should consider source of funds checks and the risk of transfer rejection in advance.

Main Risks for the Russian Crypto Market

The main risks are not related to a single regulation, but to the fact that the legal market is becoming more visible to external oversight.

  • Crypto addresses of legal exchanges, brokers, and digital depositories are easier to identify.
  • Funds passing through Russian platforms may receive a higher risk profile abroad.
  • When transferring to international services, confirmation of the origin of funds may be requested.
  • A separate price circuit with a discount to international quotes may form within the country.
  • The risk of token blocking by the issuer remains for the US dollar stablecoin.
  • If channels to external liquidity narrow, the legal market may become a closed system.

Earlier, Vladislav Kochetkov, chairman of the board of the Finam group, also warned about the risk of a separate “tainted cryptocurrency” market emerging in Russia with a noticeable discount to international benchmarks.
