Crypto Settlements: Major Russian Banks Ready to Compete for New Market

0 Reading time: 9 min. Сoinspot

Crypto settlements for cross-border payments are already technically available to the largest Russian banks, and bringing this area into the public sphere could quickly turn it into one of the most competitive segments of the financial market.

Dmitry Vitman, Chief Operating Officer of Alfa-Bank’s corporate and investment business unit, stated that the main players in the banking sector had prepared the infrastructure for settlements in digital currencies in advance. In his assessment, the competition for the first clients will be tough, since the starting positions of the major market participants are already comparable.

  • According to Dmitry Vitman, major banks in Russia have fully prepared the technical foundation for cross-border settlements in cryptocurrency.
  • The launch of this area could intensify competition among financial organizations for corporate clients.
  • The main barrier now is not technology, but the need to explain the mechanics of new tools to businesses almost from scratch.

Banks Have Prepared Infrastructure for Cryptocurrency Settlements

According to Dmitry Vitman, the largest Russian banks already have everything necessary to conduct cross-border transactions using digital currencies. This means that the technical part is no longer the main limitation for launching the service.

“The largest Russian banks have built all the infrastructure for cryptocurrency settlements one hundred percent. It will be a red ocean,” said Dmitry Vitman.

By “red ocean,” he means a market where participants are already ready to operate and are forced to compete for the same audience. In such an environment, the advantage goes to those who reach the client faster, explain the product better, and manage to capture market share before the segment becomes mainstream.

At Alfa-Bank, according to Dmitry Vitman, competition is seen not as a threat, but as an opportunity. When the rules of the game change, the bank can strengthen its position precisely through the speed and quality of launching a new service.

“At Alfa, we love competition, it is the engine. When the market changes, you can win market share on this change,” noted Dmitry Vitman.

Demand for Crypto Settlements Is Still Forming

Having ready infrastructure does not mean the market is already mature. Dmitry Vitman emphasizes: the main work is now not about technology, but about generating demand. Banks went through a similar path when developing digital financial assets, when clients had to be thoroughly explained how the new tool works and why it is needed for business.

According to him, the first to adopt such services are companies that have already dealt with cryptocurrency without banks’ involvement. These are primarily miners, as well as importers working with jurisdictions where digital assets are used much more actively.

For the average corporate client, cryptocurrency is still an unfamiliar tool. Businesses need to be shown how pricing is formed, how digital currency differs from traditional solutions, and how such a payment system can fit into the company’s current processes.

“A large number of clients need to be trained, approached, explained, with rather low returns at the initial stages,” said Dmitry Vitman.

Why Businesses Will Have to Understand New Rules

For companies, the topic of crypto settlements is important not only as another way to conduct a banking transaction. It is about a new circuit of international payments, where cryptocurrency, traditional currency, settlements with counterparties, and financial control requirements are all present.

In Russia, such solutions are inevitably considered in relation to the position of regulators and agencies. In the public sphere, the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation, the Central Bank, the Bank of Russia, and the Federal Financial Monitoring Service are often mentioned alongside this topic. For businesses, this means that along with the technology, they will have to take into account the rules for its use.

At the international level, interest in alternative settlement tools is growing amid restrictions and the changing role of traditional currencies. Companies are comparing different options:

  • US dollar
  • Settlements through Europe
  • Transactions with partners in other jurisdictions
  • Digital assets, including Bitcoin

Anton Germanovich Siluanov, as the head of the financial department, also remains one of the key figures in the Russian discussion on financial policy. At the same time, the external environment remains complex: the United States of America and other major markets continue to influence the availability of international settlements for businesses.

That is why competition among banks for clients in crypto settlements will not only be about commissions or transaction speed. The winner will be the one who can make the new tool understandable, legally precise, and convenient for companies that need working cross-border payments.

What Is a Crypto Account and Where Are Crypto Settlements Used

A crypto account is an account or wallet for storing and transferring digital assets. Unlike a regular bank account, it does not work with traditional currency, but with cryptocurrency: transactions go through digital infrastructure, and access to assets depends on the chosen service and key storage rules.

In business, crypto settlements can be used for cross-border payments, settlements with counterparties, operations by importers, and companies that have already dealt with digital assets. In private life, such tools are more often seen as a way to transfer value between users, but for the corporate market, speed, clear rules, and risk control are more important.

Profitability, Prices, and Key Terms of the Crypto Market

Earnings from cryptocurrency are usually associated with asset price growth, trading, long-term holding, or using digital tools in settlements. Profitability depends on demand, liquidity, news, regulation, the overall market situation, and volatility. Bitcoin remains the most recognizable benchmark for many market participants, but choosing an asset requires a separate risk assessment.

  • Altcoin — any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin.
  • Stablecoin — a digital asset whose value is usually pegged to another currency or asset.
  • NFT — a unique digital token that can confirm the right to a specific digital object.
  • Smart contract — a program on the blockchain that automatically executes the specified terms of a transaction.

The price of cryptocurrency is determined by supply and demand on the market. Capitalization is usually calculated as the price of one asset multiplied by the number of such assets in circulation.

How to Choose a Platform and Reduce Risks

When choosing a platform for a crypto account, it is important for businesses to look at storage security, commission transparency, client identification procedures, support quality, availability of required currencies, and clarity of documentation. The larger the amount and the more complex the settlement, the more important it is to check in advance how the service handles erroneous transfers, blocks, and transaction confirmations.

The main risks of crypto settlements are sharp price fluctuations, cyberattacks, loss of access to the wallet, errors in transfers, and legal uncertainty. These risks can be reduced by separate storage of assets, multi-factor protection, address verification before sending, transaction limits, and working only with tools whose rules are clear to the company.

Regulation and taxation depend on the country, participant status, and nature of the transaction. In Russia, crypto settlements are linked to financial control requirements, the position of regulators, and income accounting issues. Clearer rules could make the market more understandable for banks and clients, but at the same time increase compliance and paperwork requirements.
