What Will Change for Investors

The State Duma this week approved the law in the second and third readings. The final version introduced a new mechanism: investors will be able to exchange cryptocurrency for traditional Russian stock market instruments.

The central bank clarified that the exchange of digital currencies for securities accounted for in Russia will be arranged roughly the same as exchanging one security for another. If the transaction goes through an intermediary, the scheme looks like this:

Cryptocurrency Exchange for Securities: Bank of Russia Explains New Mechanism

  • The investor can carry out the exchange through a broker.
  • Another option is to exchange through an exchanger, if it participates in such an operation.
  • Settlements for securities are reflected in the depository.
  • Settlements for digital assets are reflected in the digital depository.

What Securities Can Be Received for Digital Currency

It will be allowed to exchange digital assets for any Russian securities. The main options:

  • Shares: Russian securities available for exchange.
  • Bonds: Russian securities that can also be obtained for digital currency.
  • Investment fund units: another instrument included in the new exchange mechanism.

For the market, this means the emergence of a new link between crypto assets and the familiar financial infrastructure.

At the same time, such operations cannot be carried out on the basis of a public offer. The restriction is intended to separate individual transactions from mass offerings to an unlimited number of investors.

Stablecoins Will Also Be Included in the Mechanism

The new procedure will apply not only to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Depending on the platform, other popular digital assets such as Ethereum, as well as foreign stablecoins like USDT, may also participate in the exchange. The specific list will always depend on the rules of the broker, exchanger, or other platform.

This means that digital currency can act as an asset that the investor exchanges for Russian financial instruments.

The launch of the mechanism will take time. Digital depositories will need to prepare for accounting of cryptocurrencies and obtain the necessary licenses before such operations can fully function.

How to Choose an Exchanger and a Favorable Rate

There is no universally best exchanger: the suitable option depends on the required currency, amount, method of receiving funds, and available rate. Before the transaction, it is worth comparing several platforms rather than relying only on the first price.

  • Check the rate and the final amount to be received.
  • Consider commissions, network fees, and possible hidden charges.
  • Look at the service’s reputation, transparency of conditions, support, and user verification requirements.
  • Compare the conditions of exchangers, exchanges, and P2P platforms if such a method suits your needs.

How Cryptocurrency Exchange Works

Usually, the process consists of several steps: the user selects the exchange direction, specifies the amount and details, transfers the cryptocurrency, and then receives the chosen asset or money after the operation is confirmed.

  • Through an online service: the exchanger sets the rate and terms of the transaction.
  • Through a broker: the operation may be related to the purchase or receipt of securities.
  • Through an exchange or P2P platform: the conditions depend on the selected service and the other party to the transaction.

The speed depends on network congestion, platform rules, user verification, and the chosen exchange direction. Some operations are completed quickly, while others take more time due to confirmations and internal checks.

Can Cryptocurrency Be Exchanged for Regular Money in Russia

Exchanging cryptocurrency for fiat money is possible through services, exchanges, or P2P transactions if the selected platform supports such a withdrawal. In Russia, it is important to consider current rules, user identification requirements, specific service restrictions, and the risks of settlements with unknown counterparties.

For a safe exchange, it is better to check the platform in advance, not transfer assets without clear transaction terms, keep confirmations of operations, and remember that the responsibility for choosing a counterparty and complying with requirements lies with the exchange participant.
