Mining Farm in Buryatia Operated in an Abandoned Administrative Building

0 Reading time: 6 min. Сoinspot

The mining farm was discovered by energy workers and police in Gusinoozersk, a city in the Republic of Buryatia. In this region, Russia has imposed an official ban on cryptocurrency mining, so the discovery immediately prompted an inspection of the network connection.

What Was Found During the Raid

Cryptocurrency mining equipment was found in a vacant administrative building during a special raid. In addition to mining devices, there was equipment for remote management of the installations inside.

According to law enforcement and employees of the Rosseti state corporation branch, the building was connected to the power grid without permission. The illegal electricity consumption was estimated at about 400,000 kWh, and the damage to the energy company at 1.4 million rubles.

A mining farm in simple terms is a set of equipment that constantly performs calculations to mine cryptocurrency. Its goal is to find solutions for the blockchain according to the rules of ‘proof of work,’ receive rewards, and help the network confirm transactions.

Such a setup usually requires:

  • Computer: motherboard, processor, and RAM.
  • Graphics cards or ASIC devices.
  • Power supply unit.
  • Cooling system: air conditioner or fans.
  • Mining software.

The equipment is chosen for a specific coin and algorithm: energy efficiency, cost, available power, and cooling requirements are important.

  • GPU farms on graphics cards are more flexible in coin selection but require careful setup and cooling.
  • ASIC devices are usually more efficient for specific algorithms but are more expensive and less versatile.
  • CPU mining uses the central processor, but in most tasks is less efficient than specialized equipment.

How a Farm Is Assembled and Set Up

The assembly starts with selecting equipment for the required algorithm: motherboard, processor, memory, graphics cards or ASIC, power supply, and cooling. Then the devices are connected, mining software is installed, and it is configured for the chosen cryptocurrency.

Why Illegal Mining Came Under Pressure

The State Duma is considering a bill on fines for illegal mining. In April, the document passed its first reading. Sanctions of up to 2 million rubles are proposed for mining cryptocurrency without a license, exceeding power consumption limits, and operating in areas where a direct ban is in effect.

By the second reading, the initiative was expanded: it added a ban on mining in registered data processing centers. Separately, deputies are discussing criminal liability for miners not in the state register if their activities caused significant damage or brought in large income.

For such violators, fines of up to 2.5 million rubles, confiscation of property, and up to five years in prison may be provided. At the end of May, this bill also passed its first reading.

In a residential setting, a mining farm quickly faces practical limitations: noise, heat, cooling, and load on the wiring. From a legal perspective, regional bans, power consumption limits, and requirements for miners from the state register are important.

What Income and Payback Depend On

The profitability of mining is most affected by the price of cryptocurrency, network difficulty, electricity costs, equipment efficiency, and cooling expenses. Payback is calculated as follows: the investment in the farm is divided by the net monthly profit after paying for electricity and maintenance.

The cost of assembly consists of the price of graphics cards or ASIC devices, power supply, cooling, basic computer, and software. The main risks for miners are legislative restrictions, technical failures, equipment overheating, and declining profitability due to the market or increased network difficulty.

How Cryptocurrency Mining Works

Simply put, miners make equipment solve cryptographic problems. When a suitable solution is found, the network receives a new block, and participants help maintain the blockchain and confirm transactions. This principle is called ‘proof of work.’

Algorithms may differ, so requirements for equipment, mining speed, and energy consumption change:

  • SHA-2 — Bitcoin.
  • Scrypt — Litecoin and Dogecoin.
  • Other algorithms depend on the specific network and chosen cryptocurrency.

It is the high load on the networks that makes illegal farms noticeable to energy workers: the equipment runs constantly, consumes a lot of electricity, and needs cooling. Therefore, inspections of such facilities in regions with a mining ban remain one of the main ways to identify illegal miners.
