A data center in Yamal is being sold in Novy Urengoy: along with the land plot, the buyer is offered equipment for their own power generation and cryptocurrency mining. The asset is priced at 250 million rubles, and the declared payback period, according to the owner, is about 20 months.
The facility is located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and operates on low-pressure gas from PJSC Gazprom. The seller cites access to cheap raw materials as one of the main advantages of the business.
What Is Being Sold in Novy Urengoy
The site hosts energy and mining capacities, and the business itself is presented as an operating enterprise for the sale of electricity and cryptocurrency mining. The listing was posted by Baikal LLC, which claims to have been operating in the YNAO energy market for more than 25 years and considers itself a stable supplier for the region.
“Electricity sales and mining. The company was founded more than 25 years ago and operates in the field of electricity production and supply in YNAO,” is how the seller described their asset.
The lot price is indicated at 250 million rubles. According to the owner, the company has 89 active contracts for electricity supply. Among the consumers are named:
- A major airline
- Pyaterochka retail chain
- Magnit retail chain
- Other commercial clients
- Infrastructure clients
Why the Business Is Called Profitable
The key calculation is based on the cost of gas. Under a direct contract with PJSC Gazprom, one cubic meter of low-pressure gas costs 5.35 rubles including VAT. Thanks to this, the cost price of electricity at the output, as the seller claims, is about two rubles per kilowatt-hour.
The company sells electricity to individuals and legal entities at a rate of 8.13 rubles per kilowatt-hour. The owner emphasizes that this rate is currently valid and economically justified.
The seller’s stated financial indicators:
- Revenue: 100 million rubles
- Net income: 50 million rubles
- Estimated payback period: about 20 months
What Assets Are Included in the Deal
The data center includes a site for a gas station and mining infrastructure. The available gas volume is stated at 200,000 cubic meters per hour. The company currently has four containers with miners, each 40 feet long.
The list of assets also includes:
- PAES-2500 gas stations: 6
- Power transmission lines: included in the deal
- Residential camp: included in the deal
- Gas piston units: 6, installed jointly with Chinese partners
- Land plot: 2,000 square meters
The Russian digital infrastructure market includes:
- Megafon company
- Other players in the digital infrastructure market
At the same time, the facility in Novy Urengoy primarily relates to energy and industrial mining. For Yamal, such projects are important due to the availability of gas generation and demand for capacity.
What Is a Data Center and Why Is It Needed
A data center, or data processing center, is a site where servers, network equipment, power, cooling, and security systems are located. Its task is to store and process data, support websites, applications, cloud services, and corporate IT infrastructure.
Usually, data centers help businesses avoid keeping all equipment on their premises. Typical services include data storage, server rental, cloud services, backup, infrastructure protection, and support for continuous system operation.
How a Data Center Is Arranged and What to Look for When Choosing
Inside a data center, not only servers are important. For stable operation, backup power, cooling, access control, fire safety systems, monitoring, and network equipment are needed. Modern sites also use virtualization to flexibly allocate computing resources. The capacity of such facilities is usually compared by power consumption, number of servers, and area.
When choosing a data center, people usually look at reliability, security level, backup systems, location, service cost, and quality of technical support. For industrial projects like the site in Novy Urengoy, access to energy and clear operating economics are especially important.
What a Data Center Brings to the Area
If a data processing center appears nearby, local businesses may see demand for electricians, engineers, security, communications, transportation, and maintenance services. For residents, the advantages may include jobs and infrastructure development, while possible disadvantages are increased load on power grids and stricter environmental requirements for the facility.
The Far North is attractive for such projects due to the cold climate, which helps reduce cooling costs, access to energy resources, and remoteness from large cities. In Yamal’s case, gas generation remains the key factor.
Before additional questions could be prepared, the sale listing was removed from the site. One of the sources close to the mining industry in northern Russia believes that the declared business value is overstated.
Context for Yamal
Novy Urengoy is already attracting investors in the field of industrial mining. The city is beginning construction of a mining hub based on gas generation with a capacity of 440 MW. Pavel Gudimov, managing partner of the company Algorithm, previously explained the interest in the project by the low cost of resources and low expenses for maintaining engineering infrastructure.
In the future, the total capacity of industrial mining in Novy Urengoy may reach 1.5 GW, and the total investment volume—90 billion rubles. The development of such sites fits into a broader discussion about the country’s digital and energy infrastructure, which at the federal level is being conducted by, among others, Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and relevant agencies.
