What Risks Does Investing in Cryptocurrency Carry: Experts Point Out Market Weaknesses

0 Reading time: 10 min. Сoinspot

Investing in cryptocurrency in Russia is becoming more legal and understandable, but the main threats for private investors have not disappeared: weak cybersecurity of individual services, the complex nature of digital assets, and unclear sources of profitability still require caution.

What Risks Does Investing in Cryptocurrency Carry: Experts Point Out Market Weaknesses

Experts note: cryptocurrency is no longer seen as a marginal part of the market, and investments in digital instruments are gradually entering the agenda of financial organizations. However, this also increases investor responsibility. Before buying, it is important to understand exactly what is being purchased: a blockchain coin, a company token, or a digital instrument backed by real assets.

Regulation Opens the Market but Does Not Eliminate Cyber Risks

The adoption of the law on the regulation of cryptocurrency assets gives Russian financial organizations the opportunity to launch legal products and services for working with digital assets. According to Yulia Voronova, director of information security consulting at Positive Technologies, this may transfer some users from questionable foreign platforms to Russian financial ecosystems operating under local rules.

On one hand, this is a positive step: Russian players are appearing on the market who comply with legislation and regulation. On the other hand, the number of new services will grow, and their attention to information security may vary.

This is why choosing a platform becomes one of the key questions. Before choosing, it is worth comparing options not only by exchange rate, but also by operating model, level of control, and main risks.

  • Online digital currency exchange service: helps quickly exchange one asset for another, but requires checking reputation, fees, and cybersecurity.
  • Crypto broker: provides access to digital instruments through an intermediary, so it is important to understand the terms of transactions and asset storage rules.
  • Bank or Russian financial ecosystem: operates in a more understandable legal field, but the investor still needs to evaluate the product and related risks.
  • Large international platform like Binance: offers a wide range of tools, but may depend on foreign regulation, technical failures, and access restrictions.

For the user, this is no longer an ordinary bank transaction, but an operation with a digital asset, where a mistake in assessing the counterparty can cost money.

Why the Nature of a Digital Asset Is More Important Than Promised Profitability

Alexander Krayko, lead analyst at crypto broker Cifra Markets, believes that an investor should first understand the economic essence of the instrument. One asset may be a native blockchain coin, like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Another may be an obligation of a private company, like many ERC-20 tokens. A third may be backed by real assets: securities, real estate, precious metals, or currency, including the US dollar.

The economic nature of these assets is fundamentally different.

Risks, legal status, and the source of potential profit depend on this nature. A stock in finance, a bond, a token, a coin for paying network fees, and a digital asset in a company’s accounting are not interchangeable instruments. They have different rules for valuation, circulation, and protection of owner rights.

For example, Bitcoin and Ethereum are more often perceived as basic crypto assets of large networks, while Ripple or tokens on individual platforms may have a different logic of use and a different set of dependencies. Mining, token issuance, trading on exchanges, and storing funds in digital wallets also require different knowledge. It is not enough for an investor to see only the price: it is necessary to understand what drives the instrument’s growth and what can lead to losses.

How to Choose Cryptocurrency and Assess Profitability

You can make money on cryptocurrency, but profit is not guaranteed. The result depends on the chosen asset, entry point, investment period, fees, liquidity, news around the project, and the overall market situation. In a successful period, individual coins and tokens can grow by tens of percent, but the same movement is possible in the opposite direction.

Popular assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum are usually considered basic options for studying the market. Ripple and tokens of individual platforms require separate analysis: it is important to understand what problem the project solves, who develops it, how liquid the asset is, where it is traded, and what its history is.

Strategies also differ. Some investors buy an asset and hold it for a long time, counting on market growth; this approach is often called HODL. Others actively trade, use diversification, staking, or mining. The more complex the way to earn, the higher the requirements for knowledge, discipline, and security.

Where to Start and Where to Store Assets

It is better for a beginner to start not by searching for the most profitable coin, but with basic steps: study how blockchain and wallets work, choose a clear platform, check fees, decide in advance where assets will be stored, and limit the first purchase to an amount whose loss will not affect personal finances.

The minimum amount to start depends on the rules of the specific platform and fees. Many cryptocurrencies can be bought in fractional parts, so it is not necessary to buy a whole coin at once. For the first transaction, it is wiser to use a small starting capital and gradually gain experience.

You can buy cryptocurrency through exchanges, exchangers, P2P services, crypto brokers, or financial organizations if they offer such products. Assets can be stored in hot wallets for quick operations, in cold wallets for more cautious storage, or in hardware wallets. Basic security rules are simple: do not share your seed phrase, enable two-factor authentication, check the transfer address, and do not keep large sums on random services.

What Private Investors Should Consider

Experts agree that the legalization of crypto services in Russia creates new opportunities for the market but does not make it risk-free. Finances in the digital environment require not only regulation by the state and the participation of institutions such as the Central Bank and the Bank of Russia, but also basic literacy from citizens.

Before buying a digital instrument, it is important to evaluate several factors:

  • Who issues the asset.
  • What backs the asset.
  • Where the asset is stored.
  • What rights the owner receives.
  • How profitability is formed.

Cryptocurrency can bring profit, but it is not about guarantees: before buying, you need to understand the asset, the platform, the storage method, and the scenario in which you can lose money.

Diversification, choosing reliable platforms, storing long-term assets in cold wallets, and regular training in security basics help reduce risks. Typical mistakes of private investors are buying an asset only because of a sharp price increase, keeping all funds on one platform, clicking on suspicious links, and not checking who is behind the project.

Cryptocurrency investments have advantages: fast access to digital assets, a wide choice of instruments, and the ability to work with the market without the usual banking restrictions. But the disadvantages are just as important: high volatility, technical risks, the complexity of legal protection, and dependence on the quality of the chosen platform.

The regulation of cryptocurrencies in Russia is gradually making the market clearer for financial organizations and users. At the same time, it is better to consider the tax side of operations with digital assets in advance: profit from transactions may create obligations to the state, so it is important for the investor to record operations and understand the rules for declaring income.

Thus, the development of legal crypto services can become a step toward the technological growth of the market. But for the investor, the main conclusion remains the same: the more complex the instrument, the more carefully you need to understand its structure, risks, and real economic value.
