Why the USDT Price Differs From the Official Dollar Rate

USDT, like other crypto assets, does not have a single official rate to the Russian ruble. On major crypto exchanges, ruble pairs are rarely used, so the price is formed on the over-the-counter market. Several factors influence it:

  • demand for USDT;
  • supply of USDT;
  • exchange service commissions;
  • competition between platforms;
  • payment restrictions and external market events.

Although Tether is pegged to the US dollar, when exchanging for rubles, USDT can be more expensive than the official dollar rate. As of August 7, the official dollar rate was set at about 81.40 rubles, while the minimum offers for USDT in exchangers started at 85 rubles.

USDT is the Tether stablecoin pegged to the US dollar: one token is usually aimed at the value of one dollar. It is used for cryptocurrency trading, storing dollar value, fast transfers between services, and reducing the risk of sharp price fluctuations. Two versions are most commonly found in circulation:

  • USDT on Tron (TRC20);
  • USDT on Ethereum (ERC-20).

For the cryptocurrency market, such assets are important because they allow money to be transferred between services, exchanges, and wallets faster than a classic bank transaction.

What Is Happening on the Bybit P2P Market

On the Bybit p2p platform, popular among Russian users, USDT could be bought from 83 rubles and sold from 84 rubles. The peer-to-peer format means participants exchange cryptocurrency directly with each other, and the platform acts as a guarantor of the transaction.

If we summarize the available benchmarks as of August 7, the picture was as follows:

  • BestChange: selling USDT — from 85 rubles, buying — from 87 rubles; settlements via SBP, major bank cards, or cash rubles.
  • Bybit p2p: USDT could be bought from 83 rubles, sold from 84 rubles.

The main options for buying USDT for rubles are exchangers, crypto exchanges, and p2p platforms. The general procedure is simple:

  • choose a platform and payment method, such as SBP, bank card, or cash;
  • compare rates and commissions;
  • check the terms of the deal and the reputation of the counterparty;
  • transfer rubles and receive USDT to the selected wallet or exchange account.

In the same market, the minimum offers for buying bitcoin started from 5.2 million rubles. For sellers, prices started from 6.4 million rubles and below. In exchangers, bitcoin could be bought from 5.55 million rubles and sold from 5.7 million rubles and below.

Risks of Deals That Are Too Good

Market participants should be cautious about offers that look noticeably better than average prices. In such deals, there is a higher risk of receiving cryptocurrency associated with illegal operations.

A USDT rate that is too good is a reason to check the platform, deal terms, and source of funds: saving a few rubles can lead to blockages and other problems.

In the morning, the FSB showed footage of the detention of more than 20 people who worked in nine illegal crypto exchangers in the Moscow City business center. According to the security service, these points were used to launder funds stolen from Russians by phone scammers linked to Ukrainian call centers.

In the crypto market, the USDT price affects not only private exchanges but also the broader financial sector: stablecoins are used by exchanges, wallets, and decentralized financial services. Assets like USDT are traded on international platforms, including Coinbase and Bitfinex, and Tether Limited is the issuer of Tether.

The safety of USDT is not limited to its rate. Before buying, it is worth considering risks related to reserves, regulation, and issuer transparency, as well as checking the platform, commissions, and withdrawal terms.

For investors, not only the rate is important, but also liquidity, market capitalization, and volatility of crypto assets. Unlike traditional safe-haven instruments like gold, cryptocurrency remains a riskier market where prices can change quickly under the influence of demand, supply, and payment restrictions in different jurisdictions, including the United States of America.
