Base Network Outage Halted Transactions for Nearly Two Hours

0 Reading time: 6 min. abelcopy_editor

One of the largest Ethereum layer 2 networks temporarily stopped processing transactions. Base, which is associated with Coinbase, resumed block production after an outage that lasted about two hours.

The network is now operating again, but the project team is still investigating the cause of the incident. Developers and node operators were also advised to restart their nodes to restore proper synchronization.

The Issue Affected the Network Itself, Not the Interface

The incident began on June 26. The first public reports appeared around 19:03 MSK, when the team reported unstable block production on the mainnet.

Later, the developers stated that they had found the source of the problem and were checking several recovery options. After that, blocks began to be produced again, and the network gradually returned to normal operation.

For users, such an outage means a simple thing: transfers and actions in applications are temporarily suspended. While new blocks are not being created, the network is essentially unable to fully process operations.

The Cause of the Outage Has Not Yet Been Disclosed

The team has not yet explained what exactly caused the outage. It is only known that an invalid block was at the center of the incident.

It is still unclear whether the problem was related to a code error, a failure in the consensus mechanism, or another technical factor. Therefore, final conclusions can only be made after the full report.

For a major L2 network, transparency is especially important here. Rapid recovery reduces damage but does not answer the main question: why was the outage possible?

Why the Incident Matters for the Market

Base has become one of the most prominent layer 2 networks. It is supported by Coinbase, so many users perceive the project as a more reliable and institutional infrastructure.

That is why even a short outage raises questions. Applications, tokens, payments, and DeFi services run on such networks. Users expect not only low fees but also stable availability.

If a layer 2 network stops, it reminds the market that scaling Ethereum does not eliminate technical risks but shifts part of the load to separate infrastructure.

This Is Not the First Outage

Base already had a similar episode in August 2025. The new incident increases attention to how L2 projects manage failures and how resilient their recovery mechanisms are.

For the industry, this is an important test of maturity. While the network is small, an outage may seem like a technical inconvenience. When major user activity passes through it, any stoppage becomes a reputational event.

Base has recovered, but now the market needs a detailed analysis. Without it, questions about reliability will return with every new update or instability.

L2 Networks Must Prove Their Resilience

Layer 2 networks have become a key part of the Ethereum ecosystem. They reduce fees, speed up operations, and handle a significant portion of user activity.

But with this comes greater responsibility. The more applications and assets move to L2, the higher the requirements for fault tolerance, monitoring, and public communication.

It is no longer enough for users to hear that the network is working again. They need to understand whether there was a threat to funds, why the outage happened, and what measures will reduce the risk of recurrence.

What’S Next?

The Base team will continue to monitor network stability and investigate the source of the outage. The main document now will be a technical report, which should explain the cause of the invalid block and steps to prevent similar incidents.

For Coinbase and the Base ecosystem, the main risk now is not the fact of recovery itself, but trust. The faster and clearer the team explains the situation, the easier it will be to limit reputational damage.

The main takeaway is simple. Base is working again, but the two-hour outage showed that even the largest L2 networks remain vulnerable to technical failures. For infrastructure that serves real applications and capital, reliability becomes as important an advantage as speed and low fees.
