Bittensor May Change the Yield Model for TAO

0 Reading time: 8 min. abelcopy_editor

Bittensor is discussing an update that could significantly change the network’s economics. The new Root Reborn proposal changes the approach to yield payments for those who stake TAO with validators.

Currently, the mechanism works so that part of the rewards is effectively converted back into TAO. Because of this, tokens from individual subnets are constantly sold on the market. Root Reborn proposes a different path: instead of automatically selling these assets, they would be directed back to the selected subnets.

Validators Will Take On the Role of Capital Allocators

Bittensor consists of many subnets. Each is responsible for a separate AI task and has its own token. TAO remains the main asset of the entire network, and users can earn yield by staking it with root-level validators.

Root Reborn changes the role of the validators themselves. If the proposal is accepted, they will not just be technical participants through whom payments pass. They will have to choose which subnets deserve support.

Essentially, validators will begin allocating capital among different directions within Bittensor. This makes them similar to portfolio managers: they evaluate subnets, select strong projects, and direct the yield flow there.

The Old Mechanism Put Pressure on Subnet Tokens

The main problem with the current model is that yield for stakers is created through the sale of rewards linked to subnets. The system automatically converts these tokens into TAO to pay out yield to users.

This mechanism is convenient for stakers but creates constant pressure on subnet assets. The more payouts go through the system, the more tokens are sold.

For a young ecosystem, this is painful. Subnets need to attract developers, capital, and users, but their tokens simultaneously face regular selling pressure due to the payout model itself.

Root Reborn Reverses the Flow

The new proposal changes the logic. Instead of automatic selling, the validator will choose a set of subnets they want to support.

The yield that was previously sold for payouts will be reinvested in the selected subnets. These assets form a basket, gradually accumulate, and are restaked through the validator.

For the user, the basic logic remains: they still receive yield and can exit to TAO if needed. But within the system, selling is replaced by accumulation and support of the chosen subnets.

This Could Reduce Market Pressure

If the mechanism works, it will remove one of the sources of constant selling of subnet tokens. Instead, there will be counter-demand: validators will direct capital to the areas they consider strong.

For quality subnets, this could be an advantage. If validators see value in them, more capital will flow there and their tokens will get support.

Weak or unscrupulous subnets, on the other hand, may be left without inflows. This changes incentives within Bittensor: now projects need not just to exist in the network but to convince validators that they deserve capital allocation.

Validators Will Become More Important for the Ecosystem

Root Reborn increases the importance of validators. Their decisions will begin to affect not only the technical operation of the network but also the distribution of economic support among subnets.

This creates new responsibility. Validators will have to analyze subnet quality, their behavior, yield potential, and contribution to the ecosystem. A poor choice could worsen results for stakers.

This approach brings Bittensor closer to a capital market within the network. Subnets compete for validators’ attention, and users choose those validators whose allocation strategy seems most reasonable.

The Proposal Has Not Yet Launched

It is important to note that Root Reborn is not yet an active change in the main network. It is a code proposal published on Bittensor’s GitHub and aimed at the test environment.

In other words, this is not an immediate update, but a mechanism that is still being reviewed. Before launching on mainnet, the project needs to go through discussion, testing, and technical fixes.

This is an important caveat for investors. The new model could change Bittensor’s economics, but for now it remains a proposal, not an accepted part of the protocol.

Review Has Already Found Problem Areas

An early automated code review found two serious issues. One was related to an update that could encounter difficulties processing large amounts of data.

The second concerned payouts to stakers in a situation where a particular subnet shuts down. In such a scenario, some users could receive less than they were due.

The author of the proposal, a developer under the nickname unconst, reported in a GitHub reply that these issues have already been fixed. However, further refinement is still needed before a possible launch.

TAO Remains Under Market Pressure

The discussion of Root Reborn is taking place against the backdrop of weak TAO performance. Over the past 12 months, the token has fallen by 28%. For comparison, bitcoin lost 38% over the same period.

TAO staking yield is currently around 17% per year if the asset is held for a year. This makes the system attractive for holders but also raises the question: what is this yield formed from and does it harm the subnets?

This is exactly the question Root Reborn is trying to answer. The proposal does not cancel yield but changes the internal mechanics of its creation to put less pressure on subnet tokens.

What’s Next?

If Root Reborn passes testing and gains community support, Bittensor could move to a more complex capital allocation model. Validators will become not only infrastructure participants but also active curators of subnets.

For strong directions, this could be a plus. They will be able to attract more reinvested yield and strengthen their positions within the ecosystem. For weak subnets, the changes could be a problem, as capital will flow to more convincing participants.

The main takeaway is simple. Root Reborn proposes to replace constant sales of subnet tokens with a model of selection and reinvestment. If the mechanism works, Bittensor will get a more market-driven capital allocation system, and TAO validators will play a much more important economic role.
