The bridged version of the Polkadot (DOT) token on the Ethereum network has reportedly been exploited. According to available information, the attacker was able to mint 1 billion bridged DOT tokens.
As noted by on-chain tracker Lookonchain, after this the attacker immediately dumped the entire amount in a single transaction and received 108.2 ETH, which is about $237,000.
The exploit affected the Hyperbridge gateway contract, according to specialists at CertiK. According to their data, the attacker was able to bypass protection by sending a fake message and gaining access to management.
Experts say the attacker managed to change the admin rights in the Polkadot token contract on the Ethereum network. This allowed them to mint 1 billion tokens.
At Polkadot they confirmed the issue related to the Ethereum gateway Hyperbridge, but emphasized that the scale of the incident is limited.

The team's statement says the exploit only affected DOT on the Ethereum network that was transferred through Hyperbridge. Assets within the Polkadot ecosystem were not affected, nor were tokens moved through other bridges.
"Polkadot, its parachains, and native DOT remain secure and unaffected. Hyperbridge operations have been suspended during the investigation," the statement said.
The incident once again raises questions about security in the crypto industry. The story is still developing, and new details will emerge as information becomes available.
