Consider a trader who expects Bitcoin to rise and opens a BTC perpetual at 50,000 USD. The trader posts 1,000 USD of margin and uses 5x leverage, so the total position size is 5,000 USD. At that entry price, the contract exposure equals 0.1 BTC.

After the trade is open, the trader monitors price and the funding rate. If the funding rate is 0.01 percent for one period and the trader is long while funding is positive, the payment is about 0.50 USD on a 5,000 USD position. If Bitcoin then rises to 52,000 USD, the 0.1 BTC position gains 200 USD. After subtracting that funding payment, the net change is about 199.50 USD before other fees.

The same setup shows the downside. If Bitcoin falls to 48,000 USD, the 0.1 BTC position loses 200 USD, which reduces the 1,000 USD margin balance to about 800 USD before fees and funding. If the market keeps falling, the exchange may liquidate the trade once equity nears its maintenance requirement. The exact liquidation price differs by platform, though the key point is simple – leverage turns a modest move in the underlying market into a much larger change in account equity.

Understanding funding and liquidation thresholds matters as much as picking direction, because a trade can be right on trend and still fail on timing.

Some offshore venues restrict American access for that reason, and product availability may differ sharply between exchanges.

In practice, most US-based retail traders do not have broad legal access to offshore perpetual futures products. Major US exchanges have generally avoided offering the same type of high-leverage perpetual contract that appears on offshore venues, or they limit access under a different regulatory structure. That leaves many traders facing a narrower set of choices than users in other jurisdictions.

US users should also take platform restrictions seriously. Accessing an offshore exchange after a stated US ban can expose the trader to account limits or forced closure, and it may create legal risk if the product is offered outside the rules that apply in the United States.
